skip function erratic

Asked by music54flute

I am a newbie to Ubuntu, latest version.
This happens especially in .mpg/.mpeg videos, not so much in others. I try to skip forward with the left/right arrow buttons, maybe shift+arrow, but usually does not skip forward in the right direction. Instead of going forward, it skips in reverse. For a brief second, the timer shows a forward time, but then it goes in reverse. Would anyone have an explanation for this? I know pressing arrow (in either direction) skips 1 minute, shift+arrow 15 seconds, ctrl+arrow 10 minutes, but they all act sporadic, if at all. Even clicking with the mouse and moving the place-marker to any time doesn't bring the video to that time, but a seemingly random place. Could it also be a problem that i mostly watch downloaded movies?
Thank you so much for all your help.
