Howdy Mike-d. here,
(disclaimer)
I usually just file bug reports and and sometimes I'm not very good at that either, but I do watch videos and listen to music on my computer.
on of the things that has helped me learn some Linux stuff is the UbuntuGuide wiki.
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Gutsy#Multimedia_Players
There is other sources of this info around but thy this one and see if it helps you. There is also other ways to install stuff like:
Left Click on Applications->Left click on Add/Remove Applications
Add/Remove Applications Package manager type Program will load. Click on Sound and Video and click on something like Mplayer. It will tell you what it does like Plays movies and songs.
For more choices change upper left hand drop-down window next to word show: to All open source or All available Applications. Warning if you choose something from the last two options, support maybe more limited.
Good Luck, ask for more info, if you need more info.
