viewing AVI, mpg2 etc

I am a ubuntu virgin, I have just about mastered evolution but I want to view AVI from my DataBar.
I have downloaded avi-xmms-1,2,3,tar, and extracted to avi-xmms-1,2,3 but have no idea how to get it into the system.

Go to Applications -> Add/Remove.... Search for "Ubuntu restricted extras" and install this package.
