no video on movie player
I only get a black screen on movie player and vlc as well., I can hear the audio. I use dual boot with XP. With XP everything is normal
proving the hardware is functional.

What XP does or doesn't do is of zero value, it is a completely different OS with completely different support.
What is the output of:
lsb_release -a; uname -a; apt-cache policy vlc
Thanks

Thank you for your response, I am fully aware that XP is totally different and I only mentioned it because it proves that my hardware is O.K.
Ubuntu is still getting used to me and I tried all the tips on-line, but none of them were effective. I don't know what the output is but I get a black
screen with the audio. Both VLC and Movieplayer do the same.
Kind regards
Theo

Please open the Terminal (if in doubt you can do that by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T) and enter (or copy over with right-click copy/paste) this command:
lsb_release -a; uname -a; apt-cache policy vlc; lspci
Then mark the whole output and copy it into your answer. Thanks!

I hope this means more to you then it does to me.
I have tried to reinstall Vlc it still gives me audio + black screen.
Tried X11 and took off the video accelleration.
I tried various other players and managed to play one DVD but on a different DVD it also refuses to play.
I am new to Ubuntu and it has been a steep learning curve !!
Best regards
Theo

I am still having problems. On YouTube the video is intermittent but the audio never stops. I have tried various drivers and sometimes it seems right and then suddenly it stops again. I use the SM player now and uninstalled VLC.
