media players will not stream radio

Asked by Michael Donohue

I have VLC, Amarok and Rhythmbox and all three will not play the radio stations that come with them.
My wireless internet connection is fine. I can play Pandora in Firefox, but the media players will not stream.
I have Ubuntu 12.04. Thank you!

Can you please describe the process how you are trying to play the streams and what stream URLs are used?
Thanks!

With all 3 media players it seems they cannot connect to the internet to stream the stations.
All 3 come pre-loaded with stations that I am trying to use. I have not tried to enter specific
URL's for stations. On my laptop with VLC I click on Internet, then Icecast Radio Directory, then
a selection of stations come up after a moment and you can click on a station and it plays.
On my desktop nothing happens after clicking on Icecast Radio Directory.
For Amarok and Rhytmbox, the stations are pre-loaded, but they will not play when you
click on them.
The laptop uses Ubuntu that was downloaded to a Windows 7 system. The desktop is just Ubuntu.
These players used to work, but not anymore. They do play my music from my hard drive, though.

Do you use a proxy for web access?

My house has a DSL modem attached to a router for WiFi.
The media players work on my Ubuntu laptop, but not on my Ubuntu desktop.
I'm guessing there is a glitch in the desktop Ubuntu that is the problem.

Try closing VLC then run:

mv ~/.config/vlc ~/.config/vlc_old

Then rerun VLC. Is it ok?

Sorry, not it did not make a difference to any of the media players.

Problem solved. After much Google searching: Go to Dash Home, enter Network, click on the Network tab, for Network Proxy, select method "None", click on Apply System Wide. The media players will now stream radio stations from the internet. I hope this will help others I have seen looking for a solution for the same problem. Thank you to the folks that tried to help!

This did NOT solve the problem in my case. I've had problems streaming radiostreams in Rhythmbox for several months now in 13.04. I am not able to listen to any streaming audio using RB, so I've had to switch to VLC.
