Movie Player needs "DVD subpicture decoder" and cant find it.

Asked by Kevin Caspersen

I am trying to play an mpg file that I created with my Windows system, when I open it in the Ubuntu Movie Player It Says looking forsoftware, then says it cant find (DVD subpicture decoder) and needs it. When I searched The Ubuntu Software center it cant find it either. This new version of Ubuntu is hard to find and install codexes for the media player as opposed to the older version of Ubuntu. Where do I look and how do put it in the Movie Player.

The video was created the Video studio movie editor on a Win 2k pro system as a mpg2 file. is their a way of changing the out put so it will be conpatable with the ubuntu system?

Do you also have ubuntu-restricted-extras package installed? I also recommend you install VLC and gnome-mplayer

If you run:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras vlc gnome-mplayer

It will install all 3. If you can give the output of:

uname -a; lsb_release -a

I can give another command to pull in more codecs.

I confirm that I got an answer that did not solve my problem and will use the 'This Solved My Problem' button located at the bottom of the answer to conferm that I got an answer. Although it seems that we are talking apples -n- oranges. The problem with DVDs dosen't seem related to MPG Videos created by my other computer.

here's the answer to the command lines you provided: Linux harlock59-eMachines-G640 4.13.0-17-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 6 10:04:08 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 17.10
Release: 17.10
Codename: artful

i'd like not to install vlc nor gnome-player and try to stick with the xubuntu plain video player

i tried to install the following packages:

- xubuntu-restricted-extras
- h264enc
- x264
- x265
- libavcodec57
- xmms2-plugin-avcodec
but "parole" video player still doesn't allow me to play my mkv video file, i looked at the .nfo file and it says that the video codec is AVC (advanced video codec)
and audio is AAC
here's what the nfo says:

in fact, i don't really know if it is indeed x264, avc, or mpeg4,
