Unable to play dat file in totem mplayer

totem does not play VCD having avseq .dat files . The error given out is ''The playback of this movie requires a VCD protocol source plugin which is not installed".

I have tried the above said two methods and also the Mplayer/ gxine. The error being displayed is the same.

Did you install the restricted extras of ubuntu?

Hello,I faced the same problem and solved it with this steps:
(if you dont have gxine player,so you must install it).
1:search 'vcdtools' Look in:'Name' from synaptic.
2:install 'vcdtools'
3:open gxine player
4:open the file tab and click 'vcd'.
5:gxine will play .dat file automatically

You also can play it with xine multi media player but I prefer to use gxine...

hello,
to play .dat file using totem you need to copy the .dat file to harddisk and convert it into .mpg file.
1:search and install 'vcdimager' from synaptic
2:type in terminal vcdxrip
computer will copying the .dat file to /home/user directory and converting it into .mpg file
