movie player won't play .m3u sites

Since I did a fresh install of 11.10 Ubuntu movie player won't play my .m3u sites. I looked at the plug-ins and none seemed to solve the problem.
I found what I thought was a typo in /etc/mime.types : url mpeg= m3u8 I deleted the 8 and saved the file but it didn't really make a difference. M3u sites started to buffer but stopped and movie player said it was playing, there was no sound or visualization.
