Error splicing file: Input/output error

Asked by Charles Pergiel

Trying to get DVD player to play. Installed some things, set some things, still going nowhere. Maybe there is something wrong with the drive. Let's try copying the files from the DVD to the hard drive. All the small files copy fine. None of the large files copy at all. Every time I try to copy one of the large files I get this cryptic error message. Why is it trying to "splice" a file? If it can't read the file, say so. If it can't write the file, say so. Saying "Error splicing file: Input/output error" doesn't tell me anything useful. It just makes me think the computer has lost it's mind.

Found a whole bunch of posts on Ubuntu forums about the same thing, and no answers.

Do audio CDs work ok?

Can you give the output of:

sudo lshw -C disk; sudo lshw -C drive; lsb_release -a

Thanks

CD seems to play okay.

Ran the command string while the CD was playing. The CD did not hiccup, but the commands took a while to execute.

Output from command string:

ccp@tv:~$ sudo lshw -C disk; sudo lshw -C drive; lsb_release -a
[sudo] password for ccp:

If you manually mount the CD, does it copy ok?

Yes, I was able to copy the entire CD onto the hard disk without any problems.

I wonder if this is really a totem problem.

I get the error message when just trying to copy the files. Seems like it is more like a basic I/O system problem.

Unless totem is somehow involved in anything regarding reading from an optical disk.

Unless totem is somehow involved in anything regarding reading from an optical disk. No if you just copy file from desktop.
When you copy CD into hard disk, do you have issue with all CD or only one ? In first case, did you clean the lens of CD reader ?

CD (music) disk works fine for play or just read.

DVD (movie) does not work for playing or for reading.

Movie player gets nowhere, does not display any video or sound, just the error message.

If I try to copy the DVD, most of the small files (kilobytes) get copied okay. None of the big files (megabytes) get copied. A new file gets created on the hard disk, but it is empty - it has a length of zero.

This is a brand new Zotac Zbox. I haven't opened the cover and I hope I don't have to. It is supposed to be able to handle Blue-Ray disks, and I would like to find out if it can.

It looks strange!
1) Could you install VLC reader, which uses its own codecs
sudo apt-get install vlc
2) If you have enough place on internal hard drive to copy DVD
insert DVD
use contextual menu on DVD icon (right-click)
choose "Copy the disk" and on second list "On Hard Disk".
What happens ?

Installed VLS using synaptic package manager.

Used right click menu to attempt copying DVD to hard drive.
Error message box #1:

Installing packages by files isn't supported
This method hasn't yet been implemented.

Error message box #2:

All required applications and libraries are not installed.
Please install the following manually and try again:
libdvdcss.so.2 (library).

Rebooting

Rebooted, no help. Tried the copy again, same results, same error messages.

Tried to install the requested library but it didn't work. I suspect I didn't use the correct command.

ccp@tv:~$ sudo apt-get install libdvdcss.so.2
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package libdvdcss.so.2
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'libdvdcss.so.2'
ccp@tv:~$

The pictures at the link look like my box. It looks like that box uses an AMD processor. Mine has an Intel Atom which I think is supposed to use less power and run cooler. This launchpad thing seems to work pretty well.

You need to install codecs for DVD.

Joy! It works. I can copy the DVD as an ISO image, or as just files, or play the movie directly from the disk.

I am not quite sure how I got here though. Every one of the commands ended with:

0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

I see that some files got copied, but I don't quite see how that could have any effect if nobody knows where they are. I was going to attach the transcript, but there doesn't see to be any way to do that. I would paste it here, but it's kind of long and boring and since the problem is solved I don't know that anyone would even be interested.

VLC works pretty well for playing the movie. The other players that came with the version 11 installation make a hash of it. I wonder why they were included and VLC was not.

There seems to be a great variety of streaming video available on the net, and most of it is not very good. CBS is watchable, though the video quality on the ads were not. NBC is crap. ESPN is so-so. They just signed up with a new distributor so there might be hope. Megavideo is pretty good, but how do they get away with broadcasting brand new shows? Seems like the networks would be clamping down on them. Or maybe this is just all too new and everybody is just watching to see which way the wind is going to blow.

Now all I need is a Blue-Ray disk to see if this machine can handle it. Given the marginal quality I am getting so far, I expect more trouble.

I am learning all kinds of things about the current state of video these days, and not all of it is good.
