Ubuntu restricted extras does NOT install DVD decoder. You need to run:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y install libdvdread4; sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh; sudo apt-get -y upgrade

And it will be fine

sudo apt-get install libdvdread4

Then open a terminal window and execute:

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

I'm getting this message on my notebook running 10.04 LTS. I've tried the commands above (install libdvdread4, run install-css.sh, then the upgrade - commands cut and pasted). All run successfully and indicate that libdvdread4 was already at latest level and that nothing new is installed, upgraded, or removed. However, the response from movie player remains the same. I tried installing VLC, and it shows a blank black screen that immediately closes. The VLC playlist shows the title (firefly tv episodes) as having a duration of 0:00. A Lord of the Rings DVD gives the same "could not read..." result. Perplexingly, on my desktop system, also with 10.04 LTS installed, movie player plays both DVD's without any problem at all. This makes me wonder if Ubuntu justs doesn't fully support my notebook's dvd drive. I can read DVD data discs with JPG's and open office files without any problem, so it's not that DVD's simply cannot be read. Am I out of luck, or is there something else to try?

I have the same problem with my 10.04LTS. I've installed the css.sh too after everything else, but still get the error and can't play.
