Install the codecs first which is necessary to watch movies and listen to music files. From the Terminal, perform the following commands below:

One command at a time.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

sudo apt-get install vlc
