Open Gnome powermanager and then adjust the following options:

Dim the screen after a period of inactivity when on AC power
Dim the screen after a period of inactivity when on battery power

ok, did you install ubuntu-restricted-extras
have you added the medibuntu repo and installed w32codecs (I assume 32bit Gnome OS)

Run:

sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update; sudo apt-get -y --reinstall ubuntu-restricted-extras w32codecs
