How do I configure Ubuntu sound for earphones

Asked by James Sinnamon

Ubuntu cannot seem to read dvd files, no matter what software I use. I have used movie player, VLC and RealPlayer. I get no response. If I right click on the DVD icon on the desktop, I will get a list of the vob files. However I can boot up to windows on this computer and windows can recognise and play the dvds that Ubuntu cannot.

Any ideas?

You are lucky I clicked on your message by accident. From your description, I would not have attempted to answer your question (not sure what your earphones have to do with the DVD player).

To playback DVDs you need to install software that cannot be shipped with ubuntu for legal reasons.

Assuming you are in compliance with local laws, you should install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package

My Ubuntu 12.04 won't play the sound on most DVDs, and I can't figure out what makes the differenct.
I clicked on that link and got a link to the "easy install" of restricted formats, leading in turn to a message that the link had to be opened with an application. What application do I use? I don't see any "Open App."

Can you help with this problem?
