green screen in totem

Asked by TRDownShift

alright, hears the deal. i switched over from winblows about late last month, and so far ubuntu works for me... but... i cant play video with totem, and it's driving me crazy becus totem is the video player that runs on firefox.... so i cant play any of the videos from he divx stage6 site. you see anytime i try to play a video (ANY video) with totem i get audio and all the other crap but i get no video, only a green screen, now i've tryed installing a number of plugin's but none seem to do anything for it.

please dont point me to a howto/help site, it doesnt help i've ben to a ton of them. what i need is someone who knows linux to tell me wtf is going on... it's driving me flipin crazy T.T

Try using mplayer to play some videos, it might be a codec problem.

ah, yeah that works on my computer.... but i still cant get stage6 to work, maybe if you could tell me who to get firefox to run off Mplayer and not totem, i have a firefox plugin for Mplayer but it didnt seem to change anything.

well, i guess check your versions, when you right click on the green screen which plugin is being used, totem or mplayer?
`apt-get remove totem-mozilla` `apt-get install --reinstall mozilla-mplayer`

Hows your video card drivers? for ati and nvidia cards I highly recommend "envy" made by Alberto Milone http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

ah, i really dont know how to put this other then it just doesnt work at all now ^^" not even so much as sound, it acts as though it doesnt even have a plugin to play the video. as for video drivers, im not sure what i would use becus im useing the stock dell on-board crap T.T

ah, wait forgot, i have an old radeon 9250 PCI. but i was told i cant use it with linux becus it's to old and there are no drivers for it, i tryed like 4 different distros with it and i cant even so much as boot the computer on any of them. so i took it out and im running on the on-board right now.

stage6 works for me. Actually it's a nice website I did not know about.

I'ld like to make a wild guess here. Do you use the 3D desktop feature in Ubuntu enabled?
If so, there is a bug that does not give video display.

There is a workaround, described at

Well, I've done some research and while there are others with kind of the same problems... its all with old outdated software. You say you switched last month, so you have Ubuntu 7.04? After you installed you did `apt-get update` and after that a little popup icon said there was like 100MB+ of updates to install, right? Search your Dell model number to find what video card you have.

3D desktop? how can i disable that?

and yes i've done a ton of updates it was like 165MB's and some other thing i did had me useing the apt-get update, and with all the codecs and plugins and this and that i've got my hands on i know it cant be what im lacking. there just has to be something wrong somewhere in the system T.T

For 3D desktop, see System/Preferences/Desktop effects.
If it is enabled, follow the instructions at the link above.

nope, it wasnt enabled, so it's not the 3D desktop.

ah, if you guys can think of any work arounds, i would be up for it as long as stage6 works in the end.

thanks.

Have a look at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-i810/+bug/32963

You can find more hints on this by googling with "82845G/GL totem green" and so on.

Could you please also try out anyway the instructions at
http://simos.info/blog/archives/594
You can revert back to the previous settings if you do not this being fixed.
