Totem exit immediately after selecting a xvid or dvix movie

Asked by HumpieDumpie

I'm a newbee in Ubuntu. I would like to play my xvid or dvix movies. I have managed a few days back to view it with Totem, but I did not get the sound.
Now it wont play anything anymore. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

You may need to install additional codecs to handle these media types. I recommend installing a program called Automatix2 to fix this problem. Their site is not responing at the moment, but you can read about Automatix here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatix_(software)

Hi,

please note thet Automatix is not supported by Ubuntu developers and the use of this software is discouraged. In order to get the required codecs do the folowing:

Click Applications → Add/Remove. In the top right, change the setting to All available applications. Then select Other in the left panel and then select the Ubuntu restricted extras package. Click OK.

More info at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats.

Best regards,
Flavius
