Add the medibuntu repo with:

sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update

Then run:

sudo apt-get install w32codecs vlc gnome-mplayer

This assumes 32bit Ubuntu using gnome.

You can check your arch by running:
uname -r

i686 == 32bit x86_64 == 64bit

You can now pretty much play anything, if your system shows you with 64bit I can re-advise.

Dear Mrs. s or Mister actionparsnip,

    I thank you for your attendance; however, despite having installed and then applying the newest versions of the medibiuntu etc. packages, you recommended, the Ubuntu Totem does not open my imported self captured Quicktime (.MOV) videos.

Totem (and other programs, too) still requiret for codecs:

                                           mpeg-4
                                           aac
for which " no package found", the trial for such search replies.

 I am usind 32bit on a Intel Atom 270 Netbook: 1,6 Ghz and 513 mb RAM.
Question: Is this hardware not capable for video .mov data and any .mov video editing?

Again, Thanks, and best regards, Rolf Goedecke (Koblenz, Germany)

You don't have to address the reply, just reply dude :)

make sure you install:

ubuntu-restricted-extras

I assume you use ubuntu and not kubuntu or xubuntu (if you do, change the package name in the obvious way).

What does it mean "reply dude :)"?

Using Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix, having every Medibuntu restricted package successfully installed: any trial to open a ".Mov video, still requests these two codecs:

    Mpeg.4 and aac.

How can I find out, whether the small netbook hardware is not mighty enough?

Again, thanks and regards

In short you don't have to put "Dear ActionParsnip", just start your reply as you did in your last reply.

It should be sufficient (just) in hardware, you just need the codecs to do it.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask rolfgoedecke for more information if necessary.
