Search Codecs for Totem (H624, DivX, FLV)

Asked by Julian Klein

I got some video files, totem is unable to find a matching codec with its own search mechanism. These are
H.264-Decoder (MP4 files), DivX MPEG-4 Version 5-Decoder (AVI files), DivX MPEG-4 Version 3-Decoder (AVI files), Sorenson Spark Video-Decoder (FLV files)
I have Medibuntu added as repo, i have installed non-free-codecs and w64codecs (i got a 64bit system). I use Totem Video-Player 2.30.2 Film-Player and GStreamer 0.10.28

How can I get codecs for these files? TIA

If you add the medibuntu repo and install

ubuntu-restricted-extras, vlc gnome-mplayer and vlc (I assume you are using Gnome, if not then replace gnome-mplayer with smplayer)

You should pull in a tonne of codecs andbe able to play pretty much anything

You may also want to install w64codecs (as you have a 64bit OS). This is also on the medibuntu repo

Thanx for you answer. Did I get that right, that I have to use Gnome mplayer for these files, and there is no way to use these codecs in totem?

The codecs are universally accessible to all players. mplayer and vlc just pull in a shedload of codecs which helps as well as w64coces so now ANY player can play your files. Linux doesn't have some codecs for one player and some for another, the codecs can be accessed by any player. This is the same with libs in the system, if an app has installed a lib, it makes no sense to install it again when it is already available. Windows has something similar but you will find a lot of duplicated data due to bad communication between developers.

Glad you got the gold :D
