totem movie layer or VLC won't open in 10.04

Asked by Thomas Vitale

*** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in /build/buildd/libdvdread-4.1.3/src/ifo_read.c:2124 ***
*** for data[i] + VTS_ATTRIBUTES_MIN_SIZE < vts_atrt->last_byte + 1 ***

That is the error message I got in Terminal.
I have reinstalled VLC. (video Lan)
Totem or Brasero won't play or read a commercial movie on a DVD.
Thank you "tv"
ubuntu 10.04 installed alongside windows XP Pro in its own partition just yesterday and friday.
I accidentally deleted the partition and lost it. I had by fate found whatever codecs I was missing on Friday and got both totem and VLC working. But now, I cannot get it back.
pentiumIV 2.8 Ghz
2.0 GB RAM
80GB western digital hard drive
Iomega DVD burner
Iomega Zip CD burner
Everything is healthy.
Windows works fine with this system.

Did you install ubuntu-restricted-extras?
Are you fully updated?
Did you install libdvdcss2 from the medibuntu repo?

Did you install ubuntu-restricted-extras? Yes!
Are you fully updated? Yes, I believe so. I updated yesterday and it is a new instal.
Did you install libdvdcss2 from the medibuntu repo? I do not know how to do this; It is the answer, I think?

Ubuntu does not ship with libdvdcss2 which is needed to play commercial DVDs. This is to accommodate all the weird and wonderful diversities in multimedia laws but is easily installed:

sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update; sudo apt-get install -y libdvdcss2; sudo apt-get upgrade; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

This was mainly from:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

But I added the command to install the codec for you. The terminal does not give ANY feedback when you type passwords so just keep typing and it WILL work.

The program 'udo' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install udo
[sudo] password for tv:
