Brightness control does not work

The brightness control under Edit->Preferences->Display does not seem to be working. I have tried changing the settings while the video is playing and restarting the player after the settings have been changed. The settings just seem to revert to the default ones.
The video I tried it with the last time is encoded with ISO MPEG-4 (XviD, ffmpeg), but I have also tried other video formats and DVD's and none seem to work.

Can anyone help?
