Totem won't play media

After installing Ubuntu, Totem will not play any media, including mpeg files. I get error messages telling me that "You do not have an encoder installed to handle this file. You might need to install the necessary plugins." All the normal backends are installed, including gstreamer, libxine, etc. I never had this problem on my previous Debian installation. Any suggestions as to where the problem might be?
