*.avi movie on Totem

Asked by Rick

Ive added all that mentions totem in the Add/Remove section and with Synaptic but Totem says I cant play it because it lacks an add-on?

How can I play avi format files, please explain and I will be exceedingly grateful

Rick

When you try to open a multimedia file, like avi, mov and so on, from Nautilus (that is, a file browser in Gnome), you will be prompted to install codecs required to play this file if they are not already installed. Try to open that avi file from Nautilus; does the OS prompt you to install a codec?

I don't get prompted to install codecs,
when I try to play avi files I get the error message "could not determine stream"

Ive tried loading everything gstreamer in synaptic but it still doesn't work.

Try installing EasyUbuntu. EasyUbuntu will automatically install all the Codecs you will need for any format.

http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/get.html

Just click the download alpha link midway through the page and follow the instructions, its in a debian package so installation is easy.

easy ubuntu only works on dapper or edgy.. if you are running feisty you can install Automatix2 to install codecs and popular apps in ubuntu, which can be got from http://www.getautomatix.com/wiki/index.php?title=Installation&Itemid=38 It is a debian package so installs with a double click..
Note: If you are in the US, there are some restrictions imposed under the law for usage of some codecs refer the documentation for further details..

Have you solved this problem? I am not sure if this works on Ubuntu, it does on Debian. I just replaced totem-xine with totem-gstreamer to make use of the gstreamer plugins and play avi files.

Can you help with this problem?
