This "might" give you some tips https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LostPassword

Basically you need to add your new user account to the "admin" group, which isn't directly covered in the above documentation. Typically the command would be "sudo adduser YOUR_USER_NAME admin", but I'm guessing you don't currently have sudo rights (or you wouldn't be asking this question) so following the link above when you log in as root, you wont need sudo. Just run "adduser YOUR_USER_NAME admin"

Best of luck.

The first account you make is in the admin group. If you have autologin enabled and need sudo then it will simply be a case of running

passwd foo

replace foo with your usual username.

Can you help with this problem?
