How to watch DVB-T with totem?

Asked by Peter Adolphs

Although I followed the instructions on http://projects.gnome.org/totem/#dvb, I don't get DVB-T working with totem. I created a dvb-channels.conf with w_scan -ft -X >> ~/.gstreamer-0.10/dvb-channels.conf, I can see the channels in the playlist (after having selected "Watch TV on DVB adapter 0"), I can choose the channel, the led activity light on my DVB device even switches on, but totem stays black and silent. There are no error messages in the GUI or on the terminal where I started totem.

This is on Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala". I've installed a bunch of gstreamer0.10 plugins, including gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse, gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly. I could not install gstreamer0.10-plugins-fluendo-mpegdemux since this requires me to uninstall gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad which totem complains about with an error message and a list of required plugins.

How do I get this to run?

I have E X A C T L Y the same issue with mine. Funny thing is that I can get live TV when using mplayer from the command line, but that is cumbersome and I would like to use the totem gui. As a command line I simply type mplayer dvb://WROC-HD where WROC-HD is the name of a channel in the Rochester area. I also have a dvb-channels.conf in the same spot. I also have the same file copied into ./mplayer and ./xine directory as channels.conf. In /usr/share/gstreamer-0.10/plugin-info I have a file called gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mpegdemux.support and in it is listed:

0.10:element-flupsdemux
0.10:decoder-video/mpeg, mpegversion=(int){ 1, 2 }, systemstream=(boolean)true;
0.10:element-flutsdemux
0.10:decoder-video/mpegts;

Lastly, I have read that gmplayer is the exact same thing as mplayer only graphical. But when I right-click, I cannot find an option that will allow me to watch TV.

I don't know if it matters, but I am using a WinTV-HVR850 from Hauppage which shows this in lsusb:

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 2040:7240 Hauppauge

Can you help with this problem?
