probable explanation: This causes vlc to allocate an xv port, which is
then unavailable to GS

GS fails then to open an xv port, and falls back to X11 video.

no, I rather assumes it blocks access to "something". you can try if
starting vlc with 'vlc -V x11' to check if I'm right.

This should also be configurable in totem somewhere, but I don't know
how the video output module can be selected.

If I am right, this is most certainly a problem in your videodriver.
