Looks like there may be a solution to part of the problem, with the latest totem svn supporting playback via gstreamer.

As per http://www.hadess.net/2008/02/new-tla-features.html
"Totem GStreamer in SVN got 2 new acronym-laden features. First is DVD playback. Unfortunately, we still don't do menus, but now you'll be able to play the films on your DVD. The support is on-par with the old GStreamer 0.8 code. Thanks to Tim for the guidance in writing this code."

Hopefully these changes get included in totem in hardy, then all we'll need is gstreamer support for dvd menus for playback to work correctly!
