cannot extract tor tbb for ubuntu 12.04

i have tried everything to download Tor for ubuntu pangolin. I tried the terminal codes, software center, and synaptic manager. I am always getting error codes. my latest attempt was to download the tbb bundle fom the Tor website. People were saying that is the easiest just point and click. I watched a video and when i got to the part of extracting tbb after i downloaded the 32 bit from the website it just sat there and wouldn't extract. Yes i have tried installing several times now and deleting the files so thats probably a bad thing.

when i tried to run commands on the terminal i kept getting failed codes and it was asking permission for things and my password would not work even though my password always works for everything else. i looked on several websites for codes and the ones that said similar things a followed the instructions by copying and pasting.
