tightvncserver version for trusty?

Asked by Gorka Navarrete

The present Ubuntu 14.04 tightvncserver version (1.3.9) has a known problem in 64-bit systems (1). This is a critical bug that leads to loss of data when the VNC session dies suddenly.

The problem has been known for about 4 years and a patch (2) and a new patched tightvncserver version (1.3.10) (3) was released long ago.

There is any chance of getting the new patched version of tightvncserver (1.3.10) in Ubuntu 14.04? As I lack the skills to do this, there is someone I could write to solve this problem?

Thanks!

I suggest you report a bug to get the package upgraded.

What are you doing on the remote system that you are using VNC for? There may be a sleeker solution to what you are using VNC for.

Thanks

Thanks for the response.

The bug report above (1) is not enough? A specific bug report requesting the upgrade is necessary? There is any FAQ or template on how to do this?

The server is used by a group of neuroscience researchers that need VNC to do EEG and fMRI analysis... some parts of which are heavily visual/graphical. And in a few very common user cases the VNC sessions die consistently.

OK, sadly the bug request to upgrade to 1.3.10 has been for a while (2011) on launchpad (4)

There is any way to help move this forward?

Ubuntu is taking over most programs from Debian. And also Debian has only the 1.3.9 version.
There is already a request for updating the Debian package, but it has not been done so far. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=581039

The interesting thing is that there is a PPA with 1.3.10 for lucid on https://launchpad.net/~syndicut/+archive/tightvnc
So upgrading the package to 1.3.10 also for later Ubuntu releases seems feasible.

Can you help with this problem?
