Ubuntu is already using the latest Thunderbird on 20,04 https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/thunderbird
Patience, for the new Thunderbird 78, other than downloading it your self and installing it.
Updating to Thunderbird 78 from 68 Soon the Thunderbird automatic update system will start to deliver the new Thunderbird 78 to current users of the previous release, Thunderbird 68.

Look at Bug #1895643 and https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+packages
The Ubuntu Mozilla Team is already working on a package with version 78.*. Just be patient.

Thanks Manfred Hampl, that solved my question.

As 78:* is already delivered for 68*-users via automatic update I was just asking myself if it will be available in 20.04.

Not impatient, just curious. ;)
