not able to send mail with Thunderbird

I cannot send mail from Thunderbird, but :
      - I can receive correctly all mails in Thunderbird
      - I can send mail from Evolution correctly

The message of Thunderbird is :
        "Sending of message failed ... unable to connect to SMTP server smtp.hispeed.ch ... "

Who is your email provider? You may want to have a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingGmailWithEvolution if you use googlemail.

We use bigpond and have the message 'no support for requested authentication mechanism'. Maybe password is the problem as I have not found where to put one in. Marj

Hi everybody and thanks for your advice.
In the meantime I installed Thunderbird and it went like a dream. No problems whatsoever, so I skipped Evolution completely. My e-mail provider is Wanadoo.

The help proposed is specific to googlemail.

We probably need a more general help.
