thunderbird can't be default e-mail client

Asked by Diane V

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Ubuntu 8.04
thunderbird:
  Installé : 2.0.0.14+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1

Wanted thunderbird as default e-mail client, filled the box to check that at launch, an ask check now.
It doesn't check, neither now nor at launch, and evolution remains the default.

Thank you for your work. Bye.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

Go to System/Preferences/Default Apps. In the Internet Tab choose thunderbird as your default mail client.

In Hardy 8.04, I find that, even if I do select thunderbird as the preferred email client, the evolution icon still remains on the desktop. I trace the problem back to the way the icon is created in the top gnome panel. The panel's link apparently has evolution "hard coded", it does not point to a symbolic link or something in /etc/alternatives. If I right click on the icon and go to properties, I can manually erase evolution and type in "thunderbird", and then when I close, the icon for thunderbird automatically shows up.

I never had this problem in Fedora or Scientific Linux, so I'm guessing there's something especially wrong with Ubuntu.

Go to System > Preferences > Preferred Applications and under Mail Reader choose Custom.

As the "Command" put in:

/usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird "%s"

Let me know if this works.
