You can lock Thunderbird to the Unity launcher if that is what you mean. Install the client using software centre or similar and it will be an option.

If you to keep a program in the dash, just start it as usual and right-click on the now visible icon in the dash. You will be presented with an option of keep the icon in the launcher.
It is absolutely unnecessary to install any executable to archive this.
