Thunderbird will not install

Asked by Vince Swoyer

I have a new Ubuntu Gutsy installation, and would like to install Thunderbird for email, in place of the Ubuntu client. I have downloaded Thunderbird, but it won't install. I am new to this, and tried "open", and "extract" options without success. What is the correct process to get Thunderbird to install and run on my system?

Thunderbird is in repositories - install it simply via Synaptic (System→Administration→Synaptic Package Manager) or via Terminal (Applications→Accesories→Terminal) by command 'sudo apt-get install thunderbird'.

Following the answer provided, I was able to load and open Thunderbird - in fact,I am now using Thunderbird to respond.

Feeling lucky, I tried the same advice to load RelPlayer10GOLD onto my Ubuntu system. Alas, it will not load, in spite of many tries. I can get the .bin program icon on my desktop, but Synaptic doesn't have it on its list; when I use sudo apt-get install RealPlayer10GOLD, I get a message that the program was not found. I seem to be able to download RealPLayer, but can't get it to load or execute. I guess I still need help.
