In Thunderbird, highlighting a message marks it as read, even if it has not been opened

Asked by J Posey

This may not be a bug --- merely a very annoying feature.

In the inbox of Thunderbird, some message or other is always highlighted. If you open and read, then delete a message, the highlight falls on some other message. That message, if unread, will be marked as read even though the user has never opened it.

Don't know if this feature occurs only in Ubuntu or not.

This "feature" is only useful if you use the preview pane and, luckily for you, it can be configured:

Go to the "Edit" -> "Preferences" menu option. Then click on the "Advanced" icon (the last one) at the top of the pop up window. In the "General" tab, you can adjust the delay before the message is marked as read.
