web links problems with Thunderbird in Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04

When I click on a web link in a Thunderbird e-mail Firefox is not launched. Firefox gets the correct web page but I have to manually launch Firefox to see the relevant page otherwise I am left staring at the e-mail page in Thunderbird.
How do I make Firefox launch automatically from the Thunderbird web link.
I am only using one browser Firefox, system is wholly Ubuntu 11.10 but following the update from 11.04 to 11.10 I have two email programs evolution and Thunderbird.

Thunderbird is talking to Firefox as Firefox finds the requested web page but does not launch to display it

How do I get Firefox to launch automatically.?

You kindly helped me with the above suggested site to resolve my problem
of thunderbird not opening firefox web links.
The solution you recommended worked fine.
However after a recent system update I was back to square one.
I revisited the above solution to find that the update had removed the
entry "network.protocol-handler.app.https"; "/user/bin/firefox".
having reinstated the entry everything is back to normal but i am
wondering? will this now happen every time I update the system and if so
how do I stop the problem recurring.
your advice would be much appreciated.

this is still a problem with ubuntu 1204 lts with firefox 20 and thunderbird 17
