Thunderbird upgrade to 5.0

Asked by Ross Ashley

Over the weekend Thunderbird prompted me to download Thunderbird 5. Intrigued, I did so. Now I seem to have 2 tbird installations on my box ... one in the usual place, the ubuntu-released 3.x, and one in home/brashley46/thunderbird, the new version. I prefer the new version ... but the Lubuntu application launch bar icon will not bring up the new one, only the old one. (Mail Notification brings up the new one when clicked.) I'm runnning Lubuntu-desktop 11.04 on a Ubuntu 11.04 install.

run:

cd /usr/share/applications; ls t*

You can now see the files. Those files make up the launchers you use in the menus etc. If you run:

gksudo leafpad filename

replave filename with the actual filename you found which runs thunderbird, you can edit the line:

Exec=

To run the binary which launches thunderbird 5. Save the new file and it's ready to use

tried exec= /home/brashley46/thunderbird/thunderbird, it still runs 3.1 ... hmmm. Perhaps it would be better to wait for teh repos to update.

Why have you installed it in $HOME ? You can add a PPA to get it installed properly...

That is where the upgrade in Thunderbird put it. I shall look for the
PPA. Thanks!
