LIghtning 1.02b not working with Thunderbird 3.1.7 on Ubuntu 10.04

Asked by Daryl Lee

I've modified my laptop for dual booting Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04. I've set up Thunderbird 3.1.7 to use a shared partition for its profiles. Email and Enigma are playing nicely on both OSes, but Lightning is not. When Thunderbird first launched on Ubuntu, I could view calendars but not add a calendar. So I uninstalled Lightning and Provider for Google Calendar so I could re-install them afresh. Now I cannot re-install them. I downloaded both .xpis (provider_for_google_calendar-0.7.1-tb.xpi and lightning_1.0b2-tb-linux.xpi), but now neither will install. I check to make sure I had full permissions on the profile folder. What could be inhibiting the install of Lightning and Provider?

You can get compatible Lightning packages here:
https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/thunderbird-stable

I hope to get this into lucid-backports soon.

Thanks for the link. But I'm not sure how to get the extension. I added the PPA, but when I re-ran the Thunderbird extensions installer I got the same thing. I finally downloaded lightning-extension-1.0~b2+build2_nobinonly.orig.tar.gz and unpacked it, but then I couldn't figure out what to do with it. Should I be able to find build and use instructions somewhere?

You just need to install xul-ext-lightning and make sure that there
isn't a conflicting one installed in your profile.

Most people who know me don't consider me stupid, but I'm feeling that way now. I have gone to the link you gave in your first response and poked all around but I can't find anything called "xul-ext-lightning" in any form. I clicked the "Code" tab and saw a bunch of lp... items, none of which contained "xul-ext-lightning" in any form. I saw that this was a "Bazaar branches" list, so I'm guessing it's hiding out somewhere in there. I hate to be a nuisance, but if I knew where to find "xul-ext-lightning" I think I can figure out the rest. It may help if you knew I've never been in the Launchpad environment before.

Just a followup. If I felt stupid before, now i am bewildered. Everything is working perfectly and I have no idea why. I logged into Ubuntu fully intending to chase this sucker to the ground, and the first item on my agenda was to make doubly sure Lightning was nowhere in my Thunderbird extensions and profiles. But when I launched Thunderbird, Lightning and the Provider both came up functioning as desired. Maybe before I die I'll understand this.

I have xul-ext-lightning installed, but the upgrade to Thunderbird 10 disabled it, along with other important addons such as Enigmail.

As xul-ext-lightning is from the repositories, its compatibility should be extensively tested before releasing a new Thunderbird beta. I imagine pretty much everyone who uses Thunderbird depends on a functioning Lighning as well.
