Thunderbird 3.0.4 crashes at start

Asked by Fabio Santandrea

Hi!

I am experiencing the following problem with Thunderbird under Ubuntu 10.4 LTS with KDE 4.4.2: as soon as I launch it, it crashes and I get the message:

Segmentation fault (core dumped)

In order to get more information about the cause of the problem, I launched Thunderbird (or more exactly, the corresponding executable thunderbird-bin) through the debugger 'gdb' and then I get the following message:

error while loading shared libraries: libmozjs.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

The command 'backtrace' produces the message: no stack.

However, if you look in the directory /usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.4/ the file libmozjs.so is there!
What should I do? Furthermore, I have to say that this problem appeared after the program 'Inkscape' was installed on the computer. This program required several libraries that were missing and some of them should have been caused some conflict with something else related to Thunderbird (I am sorry for the vagueness). Before that, everything was working fine. The removal of 'Inkscape' did not provide a solution. The re-installation of Thunderbird as well did not help.
I am pretty new to Ubuntu and not a big expert of Linux in general, but I will try to provide any further information to anyone interested in giving some hint to solve the problem.
Thanks in advance,
cheers

P.S.: Maybe it is completely irrelevant, however I would like to mention that, after the same unlucky attempt of installation, I began to have troubles with Synaptic too. At the terminal, I get again "Segmentation fault (core dumped)", but on the other hand gdb produces a detailed backtrace which unfortunately is completely obscure to me. However, since Synaptic is just a graphical front-end (apt works correctly), could the whole mess be caused by something dealing with management of graphics/windows system? Does this make any sense? Anyway, I had no problems in using Synaptic under KDE before...

Hi Fabio, i had a similar issue related to:
1) Having ldap authentication
2) Having plugin Funambol installed.

1) solved with sudo apt-get install nscd
2) solved with thunderbird -safe-mode and then disabling funambol addon

Hopt it helps.
P.s. I liniked the related bug here, too

Can you help with this problem?
