This is still an issue in 12.04.

As workaround I suggest setting AutoMount =false in /usr/share/gvfs/mounts/network.mount and add following autostart entry:
gvfs-mount network: > /dev/null && gvfs-ls network: > /dev/null
I've attached an desktop file for this autostart entry; just copy it into $HOME/.config/autostart .
