Disable thumbnails?

Asked by luho

hello!

please is there a way to disable thumbnails at all or at least the automatic download?
why does the design assume that users want to share information about their local media with any artist cover providing webservice?

tia,
luho

You could probably just disable the thumbnailer service, I'm not sure if there is a flag/setting you could change to disable remote requests, like you can in the scopes.

Probably best to ask on the Thumbnailer [0] project, therefore I'm reassigning this question to that project.

My apologies, I never received an email notification for this question and spotted it just now.

There is currently no way to disable retrieval of cover and artist art from the remote server, and we do not have plans to make such a feature available.

The dash.ubuntu.com server does not receive any information beyond what can be gleaned from the HTTP request headers, and it does not forward that information to 7digital. I don't believe that there is any significant privacy issue here. If you disagree, please feel free to open a bug.

better late than never, thanks for your feedback :)

i could disable the automatic download and delete already downloaded (and unwanted) covers by:
thumbnailer-admin clear
thumbnailer-admin shutdown
...this even seems to be reboot persistent.

i am sorry, i didnt understand the way the data travels until a cover lands on an ubuntu-phone:
does it mean that the phone only communicates with dash.ubuntu.com and 7digital only sees dash.ubuntu.com as requestor?

cheers,
luho

The thumbnailer-admin commands are not persistent. The clear command wipes the caches, and the shutdown command shuts down the service. However, next time a program asks for a thumbnail, the service will be started again and re-download whatever thumbnails are needed.

The phone only talks to dash.ubuntu.com, which, in turn, retrieves artwork from 7digital.

Can you help with this problem?
