Updates?

Asked by Fernando

The current version of this package is around 1 year old. Is there any plan to update it to the current release? Maybe for 18.04?

 Fernando ; Hello;

quotes:

texstudio/xenial 2.10.8+debian-1 amd64

!info texstudio
21:18 < ubottu> texstudio (source: texstudio): LaTeX Editor. In component universe, is optional. Version 2.11.2+debian-1build1 (bionic), package size 5327 kB, installed size 12748 kB

<ubottu> Packages in Ubuntu may not be the latest. Ubuntu aims for stability, so "latest" may not be a good idea. Post-release updates are only considered if they are fixes for security vulnerabilities, high impact bug fixes, or unintrusive bug fixes with substantial benefit. See also !backports, !sru, and !ppa.

Thanks for your quick answer. I think I didn't explain myself well. New ubuntu versions usually ship the latest software, but texstudio 2.11.2 was already very old at 17.10 release (and also at 17.04 release for that matter). Ubuntu 17.10 may have shipped TeXstudio 2.12.6 , and Ubuntu 17.04 could have had TeXstudio 2.12.4. I wonder whether the ubuntu texstudio package is unmaintained. Looking at the shipped versions in the last ubuntu releases, it looks like it is unmaintained since 16.10. I don't currently have the skills, but it's a fundamental package for me so if nobody is in charge I could consider learning and taking over.

I suggest you report a bug. If the bug and security fixes are significant then the package will be updated sooner rather than later.

Ubuntu is not a rolling release distribution and packages will be left if there are no issues with them.

There may be a PPA

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas?name_filter=texstudio

You could contact a maintainer to see if they will support your release if they currently do not.

The Texlive site has debs.

You can easily install them and get the newer application. You can find out the architecture of the Ubuntu install with:

uname -m

i686 = 32bit
x86_64 = 64bit

Thanks, actionparsnip. I know I can install texstudio from other sources, and I also know that the package won't be updated in artful. I'm just concerned about the ubuntu package in the repos. It looks like if it has been unmaintained for the last two ubuntu releases. I'd just like to know if there is or will be a maintainer that will update it in the following ubuntu release.

I suggest you report a bug then. Highlight specifically why it should be updated (bugs fixed, new features etc)

Anyway, there're a new proposed version for 18.04 from 1h ago, pulled from debian. Maybe the ubuntu package is always just pulled from debian unstable and the debian package has been stalled for a while. I'm happy that I will likely find an up-to-date package when 18.04 comes, but I'm also a bit afraid that this will happen again in the future.

Can you help with this problem?
