Why is Ubuntu TeXLive's mathdesign package is missing fonts?

Asked by Kabelo Moiloa

When I install the texlive-fonts-extra package, I get mathdesign but it does not contain the newer "non-free" fonts included in vanilla TeXLive's mathdesign package, like mdpgd (Math fonts for adobe garamond). Specifically when I typset the following file:

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[mdpgd]{mathdesign}
\usepackage{lipsum}
\begin{document}
\lipsum[1]
\end{document}

Although the file typset's well under vanilla TeXLive, Ubuntu's TeXLive, reports the following error, "option mdpgd not defined", which suggest that the package isn't present on Ubuntu's TeXLive. Additionally, looking through the file list for the package texlive-fonts-extra, I see no file containing, for example the sting "mdpgd".

Notice that although the text font's required to make mathdesign's "non-free" fonts work are commercial, the math fonts themselves, i.e. the files in the mathdesign's non-free directory on CTAN (http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/mathdesign/non-free/) are licensed with the GPL version 2 (or any later version), see the packages README on CTAN: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/mathdesign. So, I don't think there is a licensing issue (I may be wrong). So, I ask you to please update the mathdesign package in texlive-fonts-extra to the current version found on CTAN, so that I may use Ubuntu's TeXLive, and easily install related packages such as texmacs.

The mdpgd fonts seem to be already contained in the package texlive-fonts-extra starting from version 2013.20131112-1 (which is the current development version for trusty), but not in the older versions.

Can you help with this problem?
