"Vanilla GNOME desktop" task results in incomplete install

Asked by DvoraKing

When installing using Artful's mini.iso, selecting the "Vanilla GNOME desktop" task (and nothing else) only downloads and installs about 80 packages or so; a far cry from the 1000+ that is installed by selecting the "Ubuntu desktop" task.

This results in a system that boots to a black screen, and can only be operated by switching to a TTY.

Is this intended behavior? Is the "Vanilla GNOME desktop" task supposed to be complementary to "Ubuntu desktop," instead of an independent DE option?

It seems that the "Vanilla GNOME desktop" task doesn't actually install anything.

When running "tasksel --list-packages ubuntu-desktop", it returns "ubuntu-desktop^".

Running "tasksel --list-packages vanilla-gnome-desktop" returns nothing.

Try:

sudo apt install gdm

I've attached a bug report related to the issue, since the task itself doesn't install anything

Can you help with this problem?
