extlinux-update: command not found, since Ubuntu Vivid

Asked by Tong Sun

Having installed extlinux, I still don't have the /boot/extlinux/linux.cfg file, so I tried to run extlinux-update to generate one. However, I got:

    extlinux-update: command not found

Also, http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?searchon=contents&keywords=extlinux-update&mode=exactfilename&suite=vivid&arch=any says,

You have searched for files named extlinux-update in suite vivid, all sections, and all architectures.
Sorry, your search gave no results

So how can I use extlinux? Thanks

So, by reverting back, do you think Ubuntu Vivid is broken?

No, it just means that the /usr/sbin/extlinux-update file does not exist yet in any Ubuntu package for vivid.

So you either wait for the package to get released for vivid (maybe never...) or you downgrade....

Is it your personal view/believe or it represent that of ubuntu? How confident are you that you are giving the correct answer?

That's the wrong question to ask. The right question is "How reliable is the information stored in http://packages.ubuntu.com/ ?"

I am just stating the facts as given on that website.

Mark, I've used launchpad long enough to know that if a question is "answered", then there will be little chance for it to get a second opinion.

I'm not questioning you, I'm just trying my best to find reasons to maintain my question to be "not-answered", to fight for the chances for it being answered. Hope you understand.

If you look at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/syslinux and click on the triangles besides vivid and utopic, you might see that the binary package syslinux-stuff is available only in utopic, but not in vivid (also syslinux-dev is missing).

Background seems to be https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=757063

That's a strange way to solve a problem. Note the problem is regarding Ubuntu syslinux, but not Vivid specific -- it started from version Vivid and is not solved even until zesty:

Ubuntu is taking over the syslinux packages from Debian, and there the situation is identical, see

https://packages.debian.org/de/wheezy/amd64/extlinux/filelist
https://packages.debian.org/de/jessie/amd64/extlinux/filelist

I suggest that you contact Debian.

I'm afraid that the extlinux package is NOT identical to Debian. Please double check:

Debian
https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/amd64/extlinux/filelist

Ubuntu
https://packages.ubuntu.com/zesty/amd64/extlinux/filelist

Apparently one contains extlinux-update and one is not.

Oh, you meant jessie doesn't. OK, I'll contact Debian instead.
