Synaptic failed to fetch packages

When I tried to reload packages in Synaptic I got a message like this:

W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/karmic/Release.gpg Could not connect to 127.0.0.1:8118 (127.0.0.1). - connect (111: Connection refused)

......... the same error then

W: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

please do it/update/reload synaptic without a proxy, are you able to update ?
or disable the proxy for a moment.
