Can't install software

I am unable to install new software with either apt-get or Synaptic Package Manager.

When trying to use Synaptic, it warns me that the software I am about to install can't be authenticated. If I continue anyway, it reports the following error:

that will install flash for you

why dont you dry doing a distro upgrade and get off gusty since its like all old. do a distro upgrade and see if it persists.

Ubuntu 9.10 (official release) should be released today (or tomorrow).

I suggest downloading it when it comes out. Then boot from the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD to see if all your hardware works correctly on it. If it does, then I recommend doing a custom install (custom partitioning), where you choose to leave the contents of your /home directory intact..... Make sure to do a backup of all your personal data before attempting the install of Ubuntu 9.10.
