Install Java Runtime environment

Asked by Alan Wirth

I would like to install the Java Runtime Environment to enable me to view webcams on my Ubuntu OS computer.
I have the following info:
"Java Runtime Environment
Version: 1.4.2 or later
Firefox 2.0: Supported
FAQ: Java FAQ
   1. Install Java Runtime Environment.
   2. Make a symbolic link to libjavaplugin_oji.so in your Mozilla Plugins directory. Use the copy located in the plugin/i386/ns7 directory of JRE 5.0 or later, or plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32 if you are using JRE 1.4.2."

I do not understand what this means however. Can someone please walk me thru it in easy stages?
Thanks.

I think I have successfully installed it now. I guess it was really a matter of knowing which Synaptic Package was teh correct one. Then it all happened!

I just installed ubuntu and am having a heck of a time. I found the Synaptic installer, but I can't get it to install the things I want. I need to install Java 6 (JVM 1.5) but it won't let me do Java 5 or 6. When I click on the check box and mark it for installation, it says it cannot because it depends on things that will not be installed or are not installable. I've tried adding them as well, but it does not work. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
