Perhaps this link might help you migrate from Windows?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows

Try going up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

the serach button in there searches through program/package descriptions as well as through titles so you can be quite vague when you are looking for a program or extra functionality to install.

I hope this helps!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I've never heard of an MP3 cutter. I've heard of a ripper or a converter but not a cutter

I'd still like this expanded.

I can still remember editing cassette tapes with a pair of scissors and some sellotape. I had a special machine which did the job more elegantly but was often unavailable. Some people thought it was mad because the tape wouldn't last so long and yet they would keep their tapes on the dashboard quietly melting in the sun. Then we got in-car cd-players that skimped around like crazy over even minor bumps. Ahh yes, the good old days ;)

kinda like the C64 dat tapes that when you formatted them they stretched a bit and you could get more data on them. good times. they did snap but i think we had an extra kb or 2 once (on a system that had 64kb RAM its a lot, imagine an extra 20Mb on a CD for free :)

It's possible to truncate any sound file at a PC with those sound editing programs. And even more editing of the file(s) is possible.
That's what is asking Ponton I think.

Tom/Vihar,
I will try out your suggestion. Thank you for that.

My requirement is very simple. I have some MP3 songs, I want to cut and put portion of it to my cell phone as ring tone :-). I know there are plenty of those available for Windows. Wanted to know how to do it in Ubuntu.

Cheers!!

To cut your mp3 i suggest you to install audacity package...

Please first enable the universe repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Community Maintained open source software (universe)"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

To install audacity please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(if the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo aptitude install audacity

You should have worded your question as:

"I have some MP3 songs, I want to cut and put portion of it to my cell phone as ring tone :-). I know there are plenty of those available for Windows. Wanted to know how to do it in Ubuntu."

rather than some cryptic stuff that none of us understood. If you use plain language instead of trying to be technical then its much easier on all

+1 for audacity too, or you can use mp3splt at command line:

Brilliant! :))

I think this thread shows the advantages of Openness :) I just tried a search for "mp3 cutting" in synaptic and go nothing but for "editing mp3" audacity was top of the list :))

I never thought of stretching magnetic tape for increasing the storage capacity. Good move there! I mostly found splicing special effects into a tape or chopping out messy parts of a recording were quite useful for backstage work. I tried stretching tape for making odd sound effects but i didn't get anything useful from that - i'm not a musician so my results were appalling and not in a good way ;)

An interesting thread, thanks chaps :)

Hi :)

Have you been able to try the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta2
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)
