Can you please paste the contents of
/etc/resolv.conf
The files on the servers do exist
You could also try:
sudo apt-get clean; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -f install
I suspect 'chet' is somehow a nameserver or the name of a PC on your network.
does:
wget http://
download the file ok?

Try this instead
resolv.conf is NOT a program it is an ASCII based text file so run:
gedit /etc/resolv.conf
and paste the contents here.
Thanks

sorry (new to linux!)
gedit /etc/resolv.conf
gets:

hmmm
ok lets just humour this thing. I have no idea what 'chet' has to do with anything but lets just keep it happy so you can work
gksudo gedit /etc/hosts
add a line that read
192.168.0.1 chet
(the gap in the middle is a <tab key> press
save the file and close gedit
then run:
sudo /etc/init.
Let me know how you go.

Well you can see what the addition to the hosts file did.
The only answer I can give is to search ALL your files for files that contain the word 'chet'. Obviously, /etc/hosts WILL come up as you added it yourself and will be a good way to know the search has taken place, it will take a LONG time so kick it off just before you go to bed and let it bake while you sleep.
Once you awaken you WILL have at least 1 result, type the list here and we'll see what we can do.
Peace

hm. as said, new to linux, so you might have some suggestions to perform a better search than mine....
cath@lancelot:~$ locate chet
/usr/share/
/usr/share/
/usr/share/
/usr/share/
/usr/share/
/usr/share/
/var/lib/
/var/lib/
/var/lib/
/var/lib/
/var/lib/
/var/lib/
/var/lib/
/var/lib/
since /etc/hosts doesn't even show up, i'm guessing my search is not complete....?

You only searched for files who's name contains 'chet' not the actual file contents which is where we need to search. locate will only look at the file name and not its contents. you need to use a serch tool to find files that contain the word 'chet' (Like /etc/hosts contains the word 'chet') This is what we need to search for.

cd / grep -i -n 'chet' *
It will sit for a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time seemingly doing nothing and your hard drive will thrash like crazy as every single file you have on your system is scanned for any instances of the string 'chet'
Paste what it finds in here

hello,
i found out that there was indeed a proxy installed on my computer (from when i setup linux) and that was the reason why "chet" was blocking. i removed it and it works just fine now. thanks so much for your help though !!!
