There are 2 issues there:

* You enable universe/multiverse without enabling security updates for
them. You can find a complete sources.list on
  http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/d6047 (change archive.ubuntu.com to
us.archive.ubuntu.com in that list to use the US mirror)

* You didn't hit the reload button in synaptic. After you change your
sources.list, you should either hit the reload button or use the
  command:

  sudo apt-get update
