Synaptic Package Manager can't find the most updated software?

Asked by Foris

I was using Ubuntu 8.04, and pgf 1.84 originally. later I find that i need a new version of pgf 2.0 for my work. but when i check it from the Synaptic Package Manager, I can't find the pgf2.0, it told me the latest version is only 1.84. And at the end I need to download the pgf2.0 manually and install it manually. Any opinion on how to make Synaptic Package Manager to automatically find the latest software is appreciated, Thanks.

New software isn't added to Ubuntu repositories as soon as they are released - they are first tested to ensure there are no problems or conflicts with any other software and then released. This testing is done by members of the Ubuntu community, so depending on how popular the software is the package is tested and added to repositories. In case you always want to use the latest 'bleeding-edge' versions of software, consider getting them from http://www.getdeb.net
